I would love to have Maru in the wall sticker, I bet you can sell thousands and donate the profit to help other unfortunate animals.
I think they didn’t react because the “third cat” didn’t move and give off smells like a cat.
Cats will often react to their reflections in mirrors. They can ID people and other animals by sniffing them.
It’s not a purely either/or situation but a combination of both senses.
Many can also definitely tell the difference between the “cat on TV” and another cat in the room with them. I never had a cat go after a TV set because they saw another kitty on a program about animals or other cats.
Cats are very smart, they don’t trust just their eyes… Maru and Hana are very smart ones!!! The picture doesn’t stinks like car) ahahahaha!
It didn’t faze Maru and Hana but it got me to click on this video!
You can’t fool the Zen Master and his #1 student! They are much too clever! You are not dealing with ordinary cats. (By the way, that wall art is really cute.)
If it was a real cat, they could hear it breathing, it’s heartbeat, and smell it from a few feet away. Cats are made to be perceptive.

If there’s really a hole in the wall, Maru would be in it, not any other cat. So both of them know it’s impossible.
Maru when Mom pointed the cat to him: “Ok, but did this CAT come in a BOX is all I need to know.”
I recognize that cat! He is in my house too. Peeking out of a pillow.
My husband said, “Where did he come from?”
I said, “I bought him on Amazon.”
My husband said, “He is not staying there is he?”
I said, “Yes, he is. He is washable too.”
We don’t have an English word for this kind of image, so we resort to French and call them “trompe l’oeil”, which means “trick the eye”. It might fool us once in a while, but you can’t fool Maru and Hana!

On the perception of cats (and animals in general). I have witnessed, fist hand, almost vicious jealousy over stuffed animal toys that ranged from “sorta looks real” to damn near like another live critter. This was a cute, but not particularly “real” looking cat image. Maru may have been more interested in the fake hole in the wall, more than the fake cat.
On the topic of 2D vs 3D, mmmm, not so much. While watching a Tiger play with a soccer ball (on my computer), my 15 year old Siamese cat Sophia was glued to the screen, until it ran directly at the camera, dodging at the last moment. My cat just about had a heart attack. She hissed, sprang off my lap and searched the room for the tiger. lol (poor thing)
She watches Maru&Hana intently – purring like crazy. When they do something crazy, Sophia looks at me, then the screen, then me again, as if to say, “Didja see that?!?! Huh, huh, didja?”
She talks to the screen deep in her throat – and even tries to gently reach out and touch them. She loves them both – as I do!
Just wanted to add one more thing. Regarding mirrors:
I had two purebred Siamese and two shelter cats. 4 crazy female cats at one time.
1 was frightened by the mirror, especially if she saw movement.
1 was curious why the other cat never came to visit. Sniff, paw, talk, cry
1 was “What’s that – pfffft. Nothing to see here”
1 was “Is this my good side?” (grooms more) “Or is this better?” Totally self aware that it was her in the mirror.
“Ah ! What do you think hooman ,we won’t be tricked by such a picture” (the plush toy was a different story tho)
