Scottish Fold cats actually get the signature fold from a genetic mutation known as osteochondrodysplasia, which affects the growth of cartilage throughout the body. It causes deformities – often severe ones – in bone cartilage in other parts of the body that inevitably lead to very painful and severe arthritis.
