When I was a child I had to daily fight off the dreaded bedspread monster – my cat Sox. She would wait in ambush under my bed for when I got home from school and as soon as I’d taken my school shoes off she’d pounce. Ouch!
To me, it was more as if Sensei Maru was in a Zen trance. Nothing could possibly disturb him as he meditated. This demonstrates how fully actualized he is, a cat of pure zen perfection. (Or maybe he just knows to shut down all senses when Miri is near!)
